Free public star parties are held monthly at Griffith Observatory from 2:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. with the assistance of volunteers from the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers, and The Planetary Society. They are a chance for the whole family to look at the Sun, Moon, visible planets, and other objects, to try out a variety of telescopes, and to talk to knowledgeable amateur astronomers about the sky and their equipment. 2026 Dates: 5/15, 6/12, 7/11. 8/7, 9/4, 10/3, 11/7 (Start time: an hour before sundown)

Come join us for a public star party and spend a relaxing evening in the San Gabriel Mountains under the stars looking through telescopes provided by the members of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society! No RSVP necessary. This event is a fundraiser to support the outreach of the Mount Wilson Observatory and Los Angeles Astronomical Society. Donations are accepted at the front gate. Note: No alcohol is permitted at this event.


Weekly Star Party

Garvey Ranch Observatory

Free public star parties are held weekly at Garvey Ranch Observatory every Wednesday from 7:30- 10 p.m. with the assistance of volunteers from the Los Angeles Astronomical Society. This experience offers you the opportunity to look through a variety of telescopes, and to talk to knowledgeable amateur astronomers. Please check the LAAS calendar for any updates.

Come out to see the planets and stars in the heart of SIlverlake!  We will have telescopes up to show the moon, planets, and other cosmic curios.  Grab a burger from Win-dow, excellent Taiwanese Fusion from Pine and Crane, or ice cream from Mashti Malone's while members of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society share their personal telescopes.  Its always a great time, come out and join us every Thursday from 8pm to 10:30pm.

SkyFest 2026 (August 14 - 16)

SkyFest Big Bear 2026 is a multi-day celebration of astronomy, nature, and dark-sky preservation, held August 14–16, 2026 in Big Bear Lake, California. The festival features a mix of educational, recreational, and immersive nighttime experiences centered around the night sky. Events include a Star Party Festival, where attendees can view planets and constellations through telescopes, join guided stargazing hikes, watch films about light pollution, and enjoy family-friendly activities like games and storytelling. The program also offers guided hikes and stargazing excursions, including scenic chairlift rides to mountaintop vantage points for nighttime exploration and sky viewing. For those interested in creative and educational experiences, SkyFest features astrophotography workshops (from beginner to advanced) and screenings such as The City Dark, a documentary exploring the importance of darkness for health, wildlife, and ecosystems.
